The 2024 US Presidential Elections: what to expect

The United States elections will take place in less than a year on 5 November 2024. What is expected going into these elections?

At present, the Democrats have four candidates running for office, however current President Joe Biden is the likely candidate to represent the party in the next elections.

Their candidate will be officially decided at their next Presidential primaries, which will be held between February and June next year over all 50 states.

The Democratic National Convention is planned to be held from the 19-22 August, where they will announce the results of the primary elections.

The Republican Party is far more divided, with eight legitimate candidates attempting to become the party’s representative.

At the moment the biggest contender is former President Donald Trump, having a vast majority in the polls as it stands.

However, he currently faces 91 counts of felony across two courts and two different federal districts.

The accusations include: fraudulently underreporting the value of his properties to lower his tax bill, sexual assault against writer E. Jean Carroll and the paying of hush money to cover up an affair.

Additionally he is accused of the unlawful removal of documents from the White House to his house in Mar-a-Lago, after a FBI raid of the property.

Furthermore, he has an ongoing case about election subversion in Georgia after asking former Secretary Of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780” votes in the state.

Other candidates for the Republican Party are Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Asa Hutchinson, Chris Christie and Doug Burgum. These candidates have participated in three debates so far, with Trump declining to attend any.

DeSantis is currently second in the polls, currently expected to get over 12 per cent of the votes. As governor of Florida he gained attention due to his ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill which banned discussion of sexual orientation in Florida public schools.

The next Republican debate is planned for 6 December, with one more debate following after that before the primary elections.

The results of the primaries will be announced at the Republican National Convention, which will be held between 15-18 July.

On 16 September the first Presidential debate will be held, followed by the only vice-presidential debate on 25 September.

Two more Presidential debates are planned for October, before the election day in November. The President will then be inaugurated on 20 January 2025, starting their four year term.
